Sucralose is considered as a safe ingredient and permitted for use in wide range of categories as per the regulatory agencies across the globe. The Germen Federal institute for risk assessment (BfR) did a review & hypothesized that sucralose containing food when exposed to heat treatment during manufacturing may result in formation of certain chlorinated compounds such as polychlorinated dibenzodioxins (PCDDs), polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs), and monochloropropanediols (3-MCPDs) posing a health risk.
The current study reports the results of the new studies requested by EFSA to investigate the potential for sucralose to produce PCDDs, PCFDs, MCPDs post heat treatment. This study confirms sucralose is safe for use in foods/drinks and under heat treatment including cooking/baking and rejects the hypothesis raised by BfR.
