Replacing regular sugar with low or zero calorie sugar can lead to reduced daily energy or calorie consumption and may help in weight reduction and management. To examine the effect on LCS on body weight many researches were done in past but the results were diverse. The current meta-analysis studied in depth relation between LCS and body weight & composition. A systematic literature search was done. In total 19 RCTs and 9 prospective cohort were included. These studies examined LCSs coming from foods or beverages or LCSs consumed as tabletop sweeteners. Weight mean differences in body weight & composition was calculated between LCS & control groups among the RCTs and weighted mean correlations for LCS and other parameters among prospective cohort studies.
In RCTs, there was modest but significant reduction in body weight, body mass index, fat mass & waist circumference in LCS group compared to control group and in prospective cohort study group LCS intake was not associated with body weight or fat mass, but was significantly associated with slightly higher BMI. However, data from RCT’s indicate LCS can be a useful dietary tool to improve diet compliance for weight loss or weight management plans
