Non-nutritive sweeteners are healthy alternative to table sugar and are widely used as sugar substitutes in diet. Replacing regular sugar with non-nutritive sweetener is an effective way to reduce sugar, overall calorie intake and improve diet compliance in obesity & diabetes and maintaining healthy diet in fitness enthusiastic. NNS are approved in various countries by regulatory bodies like USFDA, FAO/WHO, JECFA, EFSA. Still there are several myths around the safety and efficacy of NNS associated with its usage in humans. The current review evaluated the available scientific literature busting the myths around them and give recommendation for future research scope.

The study concluded that the NNSs are beneficial for weight management, managing diabetes when used as part of healthy diet and are safe to use within the acceptable daily intake. However, there is no sufficient data on effect of on gut microbiome and we need more studies to see the impact of sugar reduction with NNS in Indian population.
